Men of GrowRuck 09!

We’re still more than two months from the event, but things are coming together quickly, so I want to share some preblast details with you.

Registration and Deposits

We currently have 105 men signed up for the event via a deposit. We have gone ahead and booked three classes with GORUCK for a capped total of … wait for it … 105 men.

Congratulations! This will be our first three-class GrowRuck, you crazy Midwesterners!

A few things to note:

  • If you didn’t sign up before we hit the cap, we will continue to accept $50 deposits payable at this PayPal link to go on the waiting list. To be on the waiting list, you MUST send us a deposit. Experience with eight of these events to date indicates that we will have a 10% to 15% attrition rate between now and the event, so odds are very good of getting in off the wait list if you are among the first guys on it. If you do not get in off the waiting list, we will refund your deposit in full.
  • In the unlikely event that we get over 25 people on the waiting list, we will consider adding a fourth class.
  • Your final payment of $100 is due by Sunday, March 11th. Thanks to all of you who have already made this or who paid in full up front! Again, that gets sent via PayPal Friends & Family. If you don’t pay in full by Sunday, March 11th, you will be at risk of us giving your place to someone on the waiting list.

Registering with GORUCK and Signing the GORUCK Waiver

Colonel and Froman have the link to our event on the GORUCK website and are responsible for communicating it to everyone who is registered. This is so you can go in and give GORUCK your information, your emergency contact info and sign their notorious “death waiver.” You will not be charged for the event in doing this, it’s just so that they have everything they need for their records. As anyone who is a GRT knows, this is a crucial piece of pre-event planning; the list that the cadre has at the STARTEX need to match up with the 105 pax who will be standing in front of them.

Note: When you go to register, after you sign the waiver, you MUST add the event to your cart and go through checkout (you will not be charged for the event, just for any gear you might be buying) to be registered. If you do not get a confirmation email from GORUCK, you are not registered.

Where To Stay in Toledo?

Make your reservations now at the place of your choosing.  All of Saturday’s morning activities will take place at Camp Miakonda If you wish to stay at Camp Miakonda, click for reservation informationRustic, but heated cabins (bunk style with restrooms and showers a short walk) are available from $111/night (sleeps 12) to $253/night (sleeps 32).  Bedding is not provided, so plan to bring a sleeping bag.

  • Friday night, continued 2nd F @ Camp Miakonda fire ring from 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM, weather permitting.
  • Saturday morning beatdown by Dredd & OBT 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM @ Camp Miakonda Parade Field.
  • Saturday morning breakfast, provided by F3/Toledo, 8:15 AM – 9:00 AM @ Camp Miakonda’s Ford Center.
  • Saturday morning GrowSchool 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM @ Camp Miakonda Council Lodge.
  • Saturday 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM R&R
  • Saturday 6:00 PM – Sunday ???  GORUCK TOUGH event.  Location TBD.

GrowRuck 09 is coming to Ohio April 27-29th 2018 via Toledo.

The cost to participate in GrowRuck is $150. This includes GrowSchool, GORUCK registration, and a sweet patch. Please HC (hard-commit) by making a deposit via PayPal for $50 to info@theironproject.com. Please include your F3 name & city in the comments.

The balance of $100 will be due March 1st. We will send you a reminder about paying the balance. Please use the “Send money to friends and family” option to help us avoid processing fees.

What, you ask, is GrowRuck?

It’s simple: GrowSchool + GORUCK Tough challenge. In one weekend, you’ll get, 1stF + CSAUP + 2ndF + F3 Leadership Development & Training.

We rolled out GrowSchool last year as an offering for F3’s “Nomads” — workout locations that are on their way to becoming Regions and can use a little support and encouragement along the way.

After teaching through a couple of GrowSchools, we started to realize how important CSAUP events are to building 2ndF and the overall momentum toward a region. And no CSAUP event that we’ve ever seen has the same catalytic effect on 2ndF and F3 growth as F3 guys getting together to do a GORUCK Tough challenge.

So, we thought, why not combine the two?

GrowRuck will be led by GORUCK cadre and F3 PugetSound regular Cadre Daniel and will be in all ways an official GORUCK Tough challenge, but Daniel will tailor activities and the teaching to reinforce the GrowSchool curriculum and lessons. Dredd and OBT will participate in the challenge alongside the rest of the pax.

Over the last year we’ve had over 200 men complete the GrowRuck in Jacksonville, Eastern North Carolina, New Orleans, Seattle and Chattanooga.

Gear

The most frequent question asked when an F3 group begins to look into doing the Challenge is “do I need to buy a $300 backpack”. The short answer is no. A GORUCK ruck is not required (FYI: the Rucker model goes on sale from time-to-time for around $100). Also, many guys pick up second-hand rucks at Army surplus stores, eBay, or Craigslist.

Another option is to Tweet with the hashtag #LendARuck and tag the @F3GrowRuck account in your tweet asking for a ruck, and someone from the F3Nation will answer the call (kinda like the Bat Signal) and ship you his ruck to use. In return, you’ll wash it and send it back to him with a sweet F3 Lend-A-Ruck patch.

Besides a ruck, you’ll need some bricks for weigh, a headlamp, reflective PT belt, and a hydration bladder.

Letter to the Pax on Expansion Spring 2017

Spring 2017 Expansion: Our Biggest Leap Yet!

Gentlemen,

If you have heard OBT and Dredd speak, they stress that the only way F3 continues to be successful is by each man giving it away. To that end I wanted to take a minute and update everyone on our Spring ’17 LEAP efforts.

This was our most ambitious and successful set of LEAP’s to date!

Some key numbers:
8: Cities launched (Pittsburgh, Toledo, Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis, Birmingham, Minneapolis).
Over 600: New FNGs who have experienced F3 this spring at those locations.
53: Pax who traveled Downrange to #GiveItAway.
10: Current F3 states that sent pax DR to help with the LEAP (FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, OH, TN, MS, IN, PA).
$29,462: F3 funds spent to reimburse travel costs and provide LEAP stipends.

This was a major undertaking for a load of volunteers.

First and most important is to acknowledge the leadership of Starfish (Drew Dixon; Winston-Salem/Charlotte). He Qed the Spring 2017 LEAP, taking on our most ambitious set of launches ever while also juggling being a husband, father, and serving as CFO in a position that requires him to commute and spend many nights away from his family. A Winston-Salem Redwood Original, Starfish has helped lead the success and growth of F3 across the Piedmont Triad region.

Starfish talks a lot of smack and is always smiling, which helps hide just how huge an undertaking this effort was for him. First the research and conversations, phone calls and social media monitoring that go into deciding which cities to launch. Then, recruiting and training pax from all over F3 Nation to serve as City Launch Qs – with the massive scale of this spring’s effort, that involved training more FNGs to the LEAP than ever before, including hours of phone calls and emails.

Here’s who stepped up to lead those launches, all of which have been successful beyond our wildest hopes. If you’re proud of F3’s increasing national profile, please give the thanks to these men and Starfish:

Those men then got to go and recruit men to go DR, find AO’s, manage budgets, worry about the weather.

That’s when the real exciting part happens. Budgeting, flights, hotels, flight cancellations, weather (Noah called to say we had a lot of rain in the Ohio Valley in Spring ‘17) and hoping that pax will actually show up on Launch Day. The Friday night before a launch is stressful for these LEAP teams. After devoting hours of planning and travel away from families, you just have to pray that a few men will come out and give something completely different like F3 a try! We hold our collective breath on Saturday morning, waiting to get a report on counts via Twitter. Success all around!!!

Finally, huge thanks to all the men who took time away from work and families to travel to our LEAP cities and share their passion for F3! Over 50 men went DR for us – by far the most ever in a LEAP season. We count on them to return to their home AOs with a new passion for #GivingItAway and to help recruit other F3 men to help with future Leaps!

We continue to get daily inquiries from men all over the country who want us to bring F3 to their city. This week alone, we’ve heard from Lubbock, TX; Daphane, AL; Chicago; Groton, CT; Michigan; Colorado; and California. We are in high demand, but we remain an all-volunteer organization when it comes to Expansion. If you have flexibility in your life and a passion for spreading F3 to new lands, please let us know. If you have less flexibility, but other skills, we need to know that as well – we don’t just need guys to lead workouts, but also tech guys, finance guys, sales guys, etc.

I mentioned the almost $30,000 that we spent on this effort. If the unspoken 4th F in F3 is “free,” where does that come from? First is revenue generated by the royalty you pay for official F3 logo gear from MudGear. When you buy a race jersey, workout sarong, hat, etc., from MudGear, some percentage of that sale flows to F3. That’s why we can be such hard-a$$es when we find out people are producing non-official F3 logo gear or going around MudGear to sell F3 stuff to the pax. So please don’t do it, and to the extent you are able please support the effort by buying your gear through the F3 store.

The second way we raise money for LEAPs is via fundraising efforts by individual regions. For the last three years, Area 51 in South Charlotte has donated profits from their annual golf tournament to the LEAP – money generated by that event has funded over 9 LEAPs! If your region is planning an event that will generate proceeds for a good cause, please consider F3 Expansion!

Lastly if you are thinking about where you personally want to put your philanthropic dollars to work, we are very interested in being that landing spot. We have never formally passed the hat for Expansion, but the demand for F3 is crazy! I wish I could say yes to everyone who inquiries about F3 coming to their town. We spent a lot of our saved revenue from the last three years on the effort this spring and the demand for Fall ’17 is not letting up. The F3 Foundation can take tax-deductible donations and send them to F3 Expansion if you ask them to earmark that money.  You can make a donation thru the link on the F3Naiton website but please tag #LEAP.

Thanks again to all the men who really sacrificed time, energy and passion to taking F3 out to men who need us. Now it is time to give it away to more men!

We are going to continue to be aggressive in the Fall of ’17. Now that we’re on the doorstep, we’re going to make a big push into Chicago this fall, launching four locations at once beginning at the end of September. We’re also going to St. Louis and we’ll connect the dots between Dallas, Houston and San Antonio in Texas with a plant in the state capital of Austin.

Preblast: Rebooting The F3 Super Bowl – The Mud Run

F3 is gearing up for the next installment of our annual Super Bowl, the Ultimate Mud Run. We aren’t just doing another Mud Run this year. The men of F3 Summerville are rebooting the whole dang thing.

After many successful events put on by the Columbia regions of F3, Ken Doll wrote “you may have noticed a steady drop in attendance over the past few Mud Run events. In addition, the enthusiasm for our Super Bowl has waned.”

It’s true. Very true. So we’re starting over and giving you a reason to come back out and fellowship with over 500 of your brothers from every F3 region.

Some things will remain the same. We’ll have a big tent. We’ll have a beer boat. But you’re going to see a lot of changes.

For starters – only one Mud Run in 2017. It will be the Spring one held on May 20th. And it’s going to be epic. Bet on it!

Best of all – more competition and more partying!

You’ll see:

1. A longer after party.
2. A new tailgating row (Second F Village if anyone asks) with tents from every region.
3. More competition before, during and after the run. Think awards for a Respect crew, Rucking crew, F3 Olympics and much more. We’ll announce all that soon.
4. A more competitive starting order.
5. A competition to see who can chug more beers than Team Unicorn Slaughterhouse Death Match – certainly going to happen, maybe, probably not.

  • ENDEX is TBD, expect late afternoon/early evening.

2017 Maltz Challenge

YHC has been advocating for awareness of our armed forces for nearly as long as I have been able to breathe. That has even been paired with F3 when I launched REDFriday here in Greenwood and shared my passion for it with groups in MECA and Mint Hill. We even spotted a guy from Richmond, Va. rocking a REDFriday shirt at one of the transitions on the BRR. Now it’s time for the Nation to tackle a pretty tough Hero WOD in honor of one of America’s finest heroes.

The DEA Maltz Challenge started in 2006 to honor Air Force MSgt. Michael maltz, a highly decorated member of USAF Pararescue (the USAF’s elite special forces unit) who was killed on March 23, 2003, during a rescue mission in Afghanistan.

Each year, the Maltz Challenge selects service members who were killed in action to honor during the Challenge.

This year, the Challenge will be held on Friday, March 10

The workout can be completed in any park or gym with minimal equipment. The workout is simple, yet difficult:

  • 400m run
  • 50 pull-ups
  • 100m fireman’s carry or 200m farmer’s carry with 50lb. dumbbells
  • 50 dips
  • 50 knees to elbow
  • 100 sit-ups
  • 400m run

Work should not be partitioned other than prescribed above. Participants can modify to half Maltz by cutting all reps in half or complete it as a team of two. If you have a weight vest, wear it.

We are asking that everyone participate to the level they can. There is no cost to register and t-shirts can be purchased separately for $20.

After the event is over, we will have a backblast posted on the Nation website for guys to enter their times for the challenge and who they honored during the Challenge. This is not to see who can complete the WOD the quickest, but to document your time so that you can see how much better you do next year!
